Deciding On A Research Aim Flashcards
1
Q
What is an Aim?
A
- Refers to the purpose of the study
- Does not need to be detailed
- Must clearly say what the focus of the research is
2
Q
What is an Experimental Hypothesis?
A
- Experimental hypothesis = control
- Used when the research is experimental
- written as HI
3
Q
What is an Alternative Hypothesis?
A
- Alternative hypothesis = no control
- Used when the research is observations
- Written as HA
4
Q
What is Directional Hypothesis?
A
- Predicts the direction of results
- Known as a ‘one-tailed’ hypothesis
5
Q
What is a Non-Directional Hypothesis?
A
- Does not predict a direction of results
- Known as a ‘Two-Tailed’ Hypothesis
6
Q
When Would You Use a Directional Hypothesis?
A
- Used when the researcher is confident enough to make a clear prediction
7
Q
When Would You Use a Non-Directional Hypothesis?
A
- Used when the researcher is not clear on what will happen
8
Q
What is a Null Hypothesis?
A
- Predicts that what we find in research happened by chance
- Opposite if main hypothesis
- Must be included in research - never rule out the possibility
9
Q
What is an Independent Variable?
A
- Thing that is manipulated by the researcher
10
Q
What is the Dependent Variable?
A
- Thing that is measured
- Depends upon the IV
11
Q
What does Operationalisation Mean?
A
- Process of precisely defining how the dependent variable can be measured
- Defined unambiguously
- Shows how the DV is measured
12
Q
What is a Confounding Variable?
A
- Things that could vary + effect DV (e.g. temperature/noise/weather)
13
Q
What is an Extraneous Variable?
A
- Don’t vary
- Nuisance variable
- Difficult to defeat
- (e.g. ability/intelligence/age/gender/personality)
