A
- asks relevant and irrelevant questions to establish a base line
- stronger physiological responses to relevant questions if lying
- no longer used in law enforcement
- used for employee screening

Control/comparison Question Test
A
- 3 types of questions
1. irrelevant - background info; establishes baseline
2. Relevant - details about the crime
3. Control - designed to be emotionally arousing for anyone; establish honesty; personal questions from before the crime occurred(ie. from the ages of 18-22 did you ever intentionally hurt someone) - examiner convinces suspect of polygraph accuracy before starting
- guilty suspect reacts more to relevant that control
- innocent person reacts more to control than relevant

Positive Control Test
A
- alternative to the Control Question Test
- ask the participant a relevant question twice, once where they are instructed to lie and the other to tell the truth
- directly compare the two responses

Concealed Information Test/Guilty Knowledge Test
A
- assesses if the suspect has information that only the perpetrator would know
- formatted as multiple choice questions that only the perpetrator would know
OR - Subject told to answer no to all questions
- physiological response to info you recognize (not the answer given)
- not used in Canada or the United states

stereotype threat
A
- Anxiety about conforming to a negative stereotype (e.g., of a liar)
- leads to behaviour that mimics the stereotype
- ex. Liar stereotype = averting gaze, squirming, stuttering (signs of stress and nerves)
