Control/comparison Question Test

A
  • 3 types of questions
    1. irrelevant - background info; establishes baseline
    2. Relevant - details about the crime
    3. Control - designed to be emotionally arousing for anyone; establish honesty; personal questions from before the crime occurred(ie. from the ages of 18-22 did you ever intentionally hurt someone)
  • examiner convinces suspect of polygraph accuracy before starting
  • guilty suspect reacts more to relevant that control
  • innocent person reacts more to control than relevant

stereotype threat

A
  • Anxiety about conforming to a negative stereotype (e.g., of a liar)
  • leads to behaviour that mimics the stereotype
  • ex. Liar stereotype = averting gaze, squirming, stuttering (signs of stress and nerves)
