Define
The amount of deaths per thousand in a population
In the UK it was 19 in 1900 now it stands at 8.9

Improved Nutrition
Better nutrition helps increase reistance to infection and increased survival chance if you do get a disease.
(-) Dosnt explain why diseases like infant diarrhoea or measels kill when kids have nutritious diets

Medical improvments
After 1950’s medical improvments help reduce the death rate as they introduced things like antibiotics, immunisation and blood transfusions and the setting up of the NHS in 1948 all help keep people fit and heatly so they can live longer.
Smoking and diet
Harper said that the reduction of people smoking has a big impact in the decline in death rates- however since 2012 obesity has taken over as 1/4 of all adults in the UK were obease (2012).
Although obeasity has incrased its not lethal as there are drug therapys where you can fix your issue, Harper says that if we avoid the American health culture we can live a long lifespan

Public health measures
The introduction of better housing, purer drinking water, improved sewage disposal and clean air acts have all helped people live longer as thy are healthier.
Other social changes
Decline in manual dangerous jobs
Smaller families so less infections transmitted
Larger knowledge of what causes illness
Higher income allows for healtheir lifestyle

Define
Refers to how long on average a person is expected to live.
Males in England in 1900 life expectancy 50 (57 female)
2013 male life expectancy 90.7(94 female)
