How does the story reject materialism

A

Throughout the entire story Ivan could be described as being very materialistic. He cares about making money and enjoying himself by having physical possessions while he does not really have great relationships with friends or family. He spends most of his time at work instead of with family and even stays late at work, blowing off his family. However, the story really begins to show a rejection toward materialism at the end of Ivan’s life. While dying, he begins to reflect on his life like most people and it becomes apparent that he is beginning to regret the way he used to be and wishes he had better relationships and spent more time with friends and family.

19
Q

How is it about a mans wasted life

A

This book is about a man’s wasted life because of the way Ivan decided to live his life. He was somewhat of a selfish man who focused on the less important things in life. He was materialistic and as a result of that he worked long hours so he could make more money instead of actually enjoying his life. He didn’t spend much time with family or friends and this could’ve been a reason he was so miserable however he never realized that. Ivan almost went about life waiting to die. It was clear he was never satisfied and maybe even a stressed man because of the way he decided to live his life. All of these examples are reasons why Ivan did not live his life to the fullest. He can only blame himself.
