Death and afterlife Flashcards
What must you know for Death and Afterlife
Teachings on hell, heaven, purgatory
Election (who will go to heaven, who wont)
What are the views on heaven
It is a place of eternal reward for people, we become transformed into spiritual bodies and get into heaven.
Protestants see it as everlasting and physical
Catholics see it as eternal and spiritual
Other views say that heaven will be on Earth when Jesus comes
What are the views on hell
It is a place of eternal suffering and torture.
Catholics see it as a real place, that acts like a deterrent from using our free will wrongly
Christians may see it as a spiritual place where there is just eternal punishment and so fourth
Hell is also seen as symbolic as it is believed that a loving God won’t cause eternal suffering to people
What are the views on purgatory
It is a place where you go before going into heaven to ‘purge’ the sins
Protestants do not believe in it, Catholics do.
John Hick says it would make sense for a loving God to put us through something like that which is temporary rather than hell
What are issues of views of thee afterlife
It’s hard to actually believe it, there is so little evidence surrounding ideas from the bible, it is not clear nor consistent
There is issues with the nature of God, how can God allow hell and eternal suffering
