Deamination Flashcards
1
Q
What is protein deamination?
A
This is when the amino group (-NH2) is removed from the amino acid molecule to make the carboxyl group (COOH) which is oxidised to provide heat and energy.
2
Q
What is the first group that the liver breaks down excess proteins into?
A
The first group is the nitrogen-containing amino group, NH2, which is converted by the liver into urea to be removed later by the kidneys
3
Q
What is the second group that the liver breaks down excess proteins into?
A
The carboxyl group, COOH, which is oxidised to provide heat and energy. This process is called deamination.
