4
Q
cognitive preparation
A
- Offenders identify situations that provoke anger so they can recognise when an aggressive outburst might occur
- Thought patterns are challenged, e.g., if someone becomes angry when laughed at, they will conclude (after training) that it is the behaviour being mocked, not them
- Consider negative consequences of anger on others
- redefine situation as non-threatening
- therapist attempts to break what may well ne autonomic response
5
Q
skills acquisition
A
- New coping skills are learned, e.g. “stop and think” and counting to help develop cognitive responses to anger
- Relaxation techniques are learned to help combat physiological responses to anger
- Behavioural assertiveness training can help deal with issues constructively, not violently to help challenge the behavioural responses to anger so the individual is in control of their emotions rather than ruled by them
6
Q
application practice
A
- Role-play a variety of scenarios to practice new skills to control anger ex. in scenarios of anger/implemented and ways of working around it enacted which required commitment from offender and positive reinforcement of good behaviour by therapist
- Done in controlled environment
- Successful negotiation of the role play would lead to positive reinforcement from the therapist
