What does Novaco suggest?

When do some people produce anger?
In situations which are perceived as anxiety inducing or threatening
What does becoming angry reinforce from a behaviourist perspective?
The individuals feelings of control over a situation, anger management strategies are a style of cognitive behaviour therapy

How to recognise when they are losing control and then develop technique which bring about conflict resolution without violence

What is cognitive preparation?
Offenders reflect on past experience and consider typical patterns of anger, offender identifies situations which act as triggers
What is skill acquisition?
Offenders are introduced to a range of relaxation techniques allowing them to deal with anger provoking situations
What is application practice?
Offenders given chance do role play the skills in a monitored environment
What did Keen et al do?
Studied the progress made with young offenders aged 17-21 who took part in anger management
What did Keen et al find?
Some offenders initially failed to take role play seriously but the final outcomes were generally positive, offenders reported they had greater self control and awareness of their anger
What did Ireland do?
Compared two groups, one group recieving anger management therapy and feb other a control group with no treatment
What did Ireland find?
- 92% of the experimental group showed progress on at least one measure
- 48% showed progress on the checklist and/or self report
- No improvements in control group
What are 3 evaluation points?
- Lack of evidence to show that this works long term: danger of reoffending
- Help offender gain insight of behaviour
- Function better in everyday life
