  • Imprisonment can be brutal, demanding and devastating
  • Suicide rates have tended to be 15% higher than in the general population
  • 25% of women and 15% of men have reported symptoms of psychosis
  • These figures show that custodial sentencing is not effective in rehabilitating the individual, particularly those who are psychologically vulnerable

  • US and UK had the highest recidivism rates
  • Many prisoners have not reached the levels of literacy and numeracy expected of an average 11 year old
  • 50% of prisoners do not have the required skills for 96% of all jobs
