A
- identify and eliminate the underlying cause
- improve mental alertness
- improve productivity

A
- no caffeine after 2pm
- don’t study where you sleep
- the bedroom is only for sleep and sexy time
- go to bed at the same time every night

A
*if chronic and patient is getting adequate sleep

A
- <12 due to caffeine
- pregnant
- heart disease
- anxiety

Caffeine function
A
- only approved nonRX stimulant
- improves cognitive function and psychomoter performance
- found in OTC and Rx products

Caffeine dosage
A
*100-200 mg q 3-4 hrs
(immediate effects and lasts 5-7 hours)
*max of 600mg/day
(important to ask how much caffeine they are consuming)

Caffeine adverse effects
A
- CV: increased heart rate, increased blood pressure
* CNS: anxiety, hand tremor

Caffeine contraindications/precautions/warnings
A
- CV disease: max 200mg/day
- Pregnancy (Cat. B): max 200mg/day
- Lactation: small amount after breastfeeding - 200-300mg/day
- Geriatric: max 300mg/day
- AVOID in fibrocystic breast disease - makes worse

- 2 pieces contain the caffeine equivalent as a cup of coffee
- caffeine, ginseng, and guarana

- wonderful when stressed, too much will turn urine bright yellow

Ginseng, Panax dose
A
- in energy drinks
* 200-400 mg po qd or bid for up to 12 weeks may modestly improve thinking or learning

- CV condition - QT prolongation and hypertension may occur
- Diabetic - may lower blood sugar levels
- Warfarin therapy - increases risk of bleeding
