Day 2 Notes Flashcards
Functions of skin
Protection, prevent water loss, sensory receptors excrete waste, prodce vitamin D, regulate body temp
Regulations of body temp
Monitored by hypothalamus; 98.6⁰F(37⁰C)
Most active cells
Create heat: skeletal, cardiac, cells of liver
Body too warm
Respond with vasodilation
4 methods of heat loss
Radiation
Conduction
Covection
Evaporation
Radiation heat loss
Infrared heat rays escape
Conduction heat loss
Heat moves from skin to cooler objects
Covection heat loss
Heat loss into circulating air currents
Evaporation
Sweat changes into gas
Temp rises
Thermoreceptors signal hypothalamus
Vasodilation; sweat activated
Temp lowers
Thermoreceptos signal hypothalamus
Vasoconstriction; turn off sweat, unvoluntary muscle contration(shiver)
Hyperthermia
Abnormal high temp(gain heat)
Environment is hot(radiation is less effective)
Skin becomes dry, weak, nauseous, rapid pulse
Hypothermia
Abnotmally low temp( absorb cold)
Exposed to cold for too long
Confussion and loss of reflexes
No treatment=organ shut down
Inflammation
Normal response to injury or stress
Skin may become: redden, swollen, warm, painful
Type of cuts
Deep
Shallow
Type of cuts
Deep
Shallow
Shallow cut
Affects only epidermis
Deep cut
Reachs the dermis, or subcutaneous layer
1st step to heal wound
Wound created, bleed occurs
2nd step to heal
Blood cloth is formed from fibrin
3rd step to heal
Cells reproduce and fill wound
Fibroblast-scecrete collagen fibers
Phagocytic-cells remove debris
4th step to heal(final)
Stimulate new tissue formation
Excess collagen forms a scar
Blood cloth- dried tissue becomes a scab
Types of burns
Superficial, partial thickness(first degre) burn
Deep, partial thickness(second degree) burn
Full thickness(third degree) burn
Superficial(1st degree) burn
Injures epidermis(sun burns) Healing takes days-weeks, no scars
Deep(2nd degree) burn
Destroy epidermis
May blister, healing varies
Cells in follicles and gland help regenerate; No scarring
Full thickness(3rd degree) burn
Destroy epidernis and skin accesory
Prolonged exposure to heat, flames, hot water
Often requires skin graft, skin substitutes
Rules of nine
Divides region into 9%
