Day 2 Flashcards
Define ATC clearance
Authorisation for an a/c to proceed under conditions specified by an ATCU
A clearance shall include
A/c Identification
Clearance limit
Route
Levels and changes of level
Additional items to a clearance
ATFM slot
Time restrictions
Comms instructions
Any special instruction
Define clearance limit
A clearance ilimit is the point to which an a/c is granted an ATC clearance and shall be specified by naming;
an a/d
a reporting point
a controlled or advisory airspace boundary
When shall an a/c be cleared for its entire route?
it is planned to remain within controlled or advisory airspace throughout the flight and
There is reasonable assurance that prior coordination will be effected ahead of the a/c
Rules on amendments to clearance
When a clearance is amended a new clearance must be issued
Pilots receive new clearance in full, the new clearance automatically cancels the old one
Controllers must ensure separation when the new clearance alters SID profile
If the SID route is altered the level profile is to be included in the clearance
Withholding clearance
Aerodrome Authority and certain other persons are empowered to prohibit flight and may instruct ATC to withhold a clearance. These persons are listed in unit instructions.
If ATC believe that a planned flight is liable to endanger life or involve a breach of legislation he/she is to:
Warn the pilot and obtain acknowledgement
Inform the pilot that the appropriate authority will be informed
The pilot may still elect to depart but phraseology is
‘there are no traffic reasons to restrict take off’
Define runway end safety area
an area symmetrical about the extended runway centreline and adjacent to the end of the strip primarily intended to reduce the risk of damage to an aeroplane undershooting or over running the runway
RESA length
Depends on A/C type, level of a/c activity, local condidtions.
For a code 3/4 runway minimum 90M recommeneded 240M
RESA Width
Should be that of the associated cleared and graded area, with a minimum of twice runway width, symmetrically disposed about the extended centreline.
RESA should not
hinder the movements of rescue and fire fighting vehicles, the effectiveness of the rescue and fire fighting provision or endanger a/c that undershoot or overshoot the runway.
Taxi way width
A straight portion of the taxiway should have a width of not less than 23m when the code is E or D and the taxiway is intended for use by a/c with outer main gear span of 9m or more
Define taxiway strip
An area of specified dimensions enclosing a taxiway and intended to protect a/c operating on the taxiway and to reduce the risk of damage to an a/c running of the taxiway
Taxiway strip dimensions
Code E taxiway
Taxiway strip 47.5m either side of c/l
Graded area 22m either side of c/l
