Causes
Breaking up the tribe is a social unit
This would insure the further progress of native farmers

Each head of family was assigned 160 acres
Impacts
Tribal communities broken up and culture destroyed as the idea of land ownership went against native American tradition
Creation of allotments lead to Indians losing land down from 138,000,000 acres in 1887 to 78,000,000 acres in 1900
Also lost nine granted to them under at as a result of being cheated by land speculators
