David Hume Thought Flashcards
What is stage 1 of the design argument?
The argument for design - there is clearly order in the universe.
What is stage 2 of the design argument?
The argument from design - the order in the universe suggests existence of a higher intelligence which is omnipotent.
What is an analogy for the second stage of the design argument?
Pile of bricks - house, pile of parts - watch
Who is Cleanthes?
The philosopher who puts forward the design argument.
How did Hume set out his objections to the design argument?
Set out in dialogue form in “Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion”
Who is Philo?
A sceptical philosopher, raises many objections.
Who is Demea?
A traditional Christian believer.
What were Philo’s ideas?
- General laws of science can explain how the world evolved, like an animal or vegetable
- Human minds like to impose order
- God could have made many poor versions before creating our universe
- A house is created by the input of many, so universe could be the product of many minds; polytheism
- Matter simply obeys its laws
- Our part of the universe might be designed, but what about the rest of it?
What were Demea’s ideas?
- Human minds are too weak to know anything of the omnipotent God
- Very arrogant to think God is anything like the human mind; anthropomorphism
