Physical Abuse
Physical interaction that causes you pain, injury, or restraint
Ex: slaps, hits, punches, kicks, shoves
Emotional Abuse
Ignores your feelings, criticizes or shouts/ screams at you, insults or threatens to hurt you, family, or friends
Sexual Abuse
Any form of rape (forced sex), insists or forces you to dress sexy, makes demanding remarks about your gender
Spiritual Abuse
Demeans your beliefs and practices of faith, claims to be speaking for God
Why do victims stay in the relationship?
Fear: retaliation, loneliness, change
Emotions: guilt, confusion, sympathy for person
Beliefs: no one will love them, deserve to be abused, person will change
Real Life: lack of job, lack of education, child support
Cycle of Violence
The “Honeymoon” (positive things about them) ➡️ Tension (walking on eggshells, don’t do something wrong)➡️ Violence (physical, sexual, emotional, spiritual abuse)⬆️ “Honeymoon”
Safe words
Say: “I am going to the mall tomorrow”
Means: “I need help now”
Where to go
Place: at home, friends, shelter
People: police, guidance, teacher, coach
Carry with you
