Filter Theory
We gradually filter out potenial partners (homogamy, propinquity, physical appearance, ethnicity + race, social class, religion, similar values)
Homogamy
Date/Marry someone w/similar social traits (age, race)

Interfaith Religion
Religion is less influential than race + ethnicity in who we marry
Interracial/Ethnic Religion
Most of US marriages (african american: more likely to experience marriage crunch - fewer potential mates), (black W and asian M have low rates of intermarriage)
Social Exchange Theory
We pick a partner who gives us fewest expectations and higher rewards
Equity Theory
Relationship is happy + lasts if both partners see it as fair, equal exchange of resources, etc.
Global View of mate selection: What factors come into play?
Wealth: Dowry ($, property bride brings to marriage), Bride Price ($, property that M’s family pays to brides family)
Arranged marriages
India, China: Shortage of single W
Negative aspects of dating
Principle of least interest: person w/the least interest in the relationship has the most power in it
