Where does the name Brown versus the Board of Education originate?

A

The name Brown versus the Board of education is derived from the most famous case brought to court by Oliver Brown. The lawsuit was against the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas in 1951 after Brown’s daughter Linda Brown was denied entrance to Topeka’s all-white elementary schools. He claimed schools for black children were not equal to schools for white children and violated the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.

A

Four black college students partook in a peaceful sit-in at the segregated Woolworth’s diner in Greensboro North Carolina after being refused service. They were inspired by MLK’s peaceful protests against racial inequality, Gandhi, freedom riders, and Emmet Till. This sparked a movement among the college students’ fellow peers and across the South.
