Data Presentation Flashcards
Weakness of particular data presentation technique
Can disguise intra region or intra country variations e.g cloropleth map
Hard to see trends and anomalies
Complicated to read
Symbols take up too much room
Histogram
Like bar graph but only show 1type of data e.g how many brothers and sisters people have
Scatter graphs
Good for showing relationship between 2 variable pieces of data
Isoline maps
Often used for showing weather data like temperature, wind speed, and pressure
Triangular graphs
Show info where 3 related pieces of data equal 100%
E.g primary, secondary, tertiary data
Young dependents, old dependents, economically active
Radial (kite) graphs
Show related data that can all be scored out of the same score (e.g. % of GCSEs students who choose geography, Latin, chemistry, maths and French
Wild rose graphs
Good for showing wind speed and wind direction
Kite diagrams
Good for showing transects e.g. How vegetation change from coast through a sand dune
Flow(system) diagrams
Can be used to show things like the positive and negative multiplier effect i.e one factor that causes another factor
They can also be used to show more complicated relationships like the hydrological cycle
Desire lines
Straight line constructed on a map to symbolise a trip between 2locations , not nec actual route
Draw one line for each journey
Advantages of good data presentation
Show spatial distribution e.g dot map Show variations between regions and countries e.g cloropleth map Visually interesting e.g colours Very bold and clear Easy to understand Clearly show trends and anomalies
