Data Presentation Flashcards
What difficulties arose with this data presentation?
Cross sections
Difficult to select an appropriate scale to be able to contrast easily
Line may not mask the true cross sections
Didn’t interpret results and give a meaningful degree of correlation
What ICT application was used-was it useful?
ArcGIS was used
Longitude and latitude for each site entered into spreadsheet along with mean velocities at each site
Proportional circles were then placed on the map at each site
What was the problem with the ICT application used?
Easy to input the wrong data & produce wrong results
Only viable for small data sets as too many can become jumbled up
What was the good thing about the ICT application used?
Visually see the changes in velocity and begin to link information to cross valley profile and wider area
Free and can be shared with others
What other techniques can be used?
Field sketch or photograph
Good things about field sketch/photograph
You can add your own annotations and pick out main themes under investigation
Very visual and shows reader the information needed
Pointers to future can be added to the sketch
Limitations to field sketch/photograph
You need to be a decent artist!!
Sketches can be open to personal bias so can be misleading- problem for qualitative information
Describe one method of data presentation
CHANNEL CROSS SECTIONS:
3 channel cross sections on one side of graph paper
Vertical axis exaggerated 2.5 times (river shallow in relation to width)
Plots joined together to give more rough appearance
