What is data?
- Data is defined as facts or figures, or information that’s stored in or used by a computer.
- An example of data is information collected for a research paper.
- An example of data is an email.
What is GDPR?
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2018
The GDPR is the new EU regulation covering people’s personal data. Companies covered by the GDPR are accountable for their handling of people’s personal information.
How does GDPR effect your business?
TfL must abide to the new GDPR rules when handling the public’s personal information about the individual to ensure it can operate as it needs to but not compromise the personal data it holds on an individual.
What are the aims and benefits of GDPR?
Put simply, GDPR was designed to give the public more say over which organisations have access to their data and what they do with it. GDPR will apply to personal data.
GDPR was aimed at protecting all EU citizens from privacy and data breaches in an increasingly data-driven world that is vastly different from the time in which the 1995 directive was established.
What is meant by penalties regarding GDPR?
Organisations in breach of GDPR can be fined up to 4% of annual global turnover or €20 million (whichever is greater). This is the maximum fine that can be imposed for the most serious infringements
How is project information is stored within your employer’s organisation?
- Project data can be stored locally in files with restricted access to only those who need it.
- Online systems such as Asite which can be used for the transfer of information and messaging that is organised and recorded.
- Pro contract is an online tendering interface and is used as a mandatory method to enable e-tendering.
- SAP storing supplier information and payment statements.
How can you ensure the security of data?
- Password protecting documents.
- Reviewing who has access to folders.
- When sending emails make sure they are encrypted so they cannot be intercepted.
What legislation dictates the storage and sharing of information?

What is the Data Protection Act?
The Data Protection Act 2018 is the UK’s implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Everyone responsible for using personal data has to follow strict rules called ‘data protection principles’. They must make sure the information is: used fairly, lawfully and transparently.
How is the GDPR relevant to the construction industry?
Companies should employ a data protection officer, make sure they comply with all the data protection policy and be clear and transparent when talking about data.
What is elemental analysis?
Elemental analysis is a process where a sample of some material (e.g., soil, waste or drinking water, bodily fluids, minerals, chemical compounds) is analysed for its elemental and sometimes isotopic composition.
What is SAR?
A Subject Access Request (SAR) allows an individual the ability to ask a company or organisation to provide data about them.
What is the Freedom of Information Act?
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000 gives you the right to access recorded information held by public sector organisations.
An organisation could refuse your request if the information is sensitive or the costs are too high.
