What is the Freedom of Information Act?
A
FOIA requirements is important to ensure transparency, accountability:
- Obligation to Provide Access, subject to certain exemptions
- Transparency and Accountability: allowing the public to access information about government activities, decisions, and policies.
- Obligations on public organizations to comply with information requests within specific timelines and to provide accurate and complete information. Failure to comply can result in penalties (including fines)
- Protecting Sensitive Information e.g. personal privacy, national security, confidential business information, or law enforcement records.
- Maintain proper recordkeeping and documentation practices to facilitate information retrieval and disclosure.
- Public Relations and Communication: maintain transparency and public trust.
- Encourages proactive information disclosure by public organizations, even without specific requests. As an employee of a public organization, you may need to proactively disclose certain types of information to the public

The UK GDPR and DPA 2018 set a maximum fine of £17.5 million or 4% of annual global turnover – whichever is greater – for infringements
