Data Interpretation Flashcards

1
Q

Interpretation scattergraph

A

Used scattergraph first to find out whether correlation is strong/weak/positive/negative
Line of best fit is subjective so can’t be sure on whether to accept/reject hypothesis so use Spearman’s Rank to confirm level of significance

Q

Spearman’s Rank interpretation

A

Statistical unbiased technique used to show if velocity and distance are correlated
Need to use formula 1-(6€d2)/n(n2-1)

Q

Spearman’s Value for velocity

A

0.841
Plotted on degrees of freedom significance table showed 99.9% certain that data collected not by chance
So can accept hypothesis of velocity increasing validity of Bradshaw

Q

Spearman’s value for bed load size

A

0.279
Plotted on degrees of freedom significance table showed less than 95% certain that data collected not by chance
So have to reject hypothesis of velocity but decreases validity of Bradshaw
Collapsed mine wall by site 3 making material by site 3 much larger than expected - a human influence
Bradshaw didn’t take into account human factors
