data handling and analysis Flashcards
what is qualitative data
non-numerical language-based data collected through interviews, open questions and content analysis
what is quantitive data
numerical data that can be statistically analysed.
what is primary data
Data that has been generated by the researcher himself/herself, surveys, interviews, experiments, specially designed for understanding and solving the research problem at hand.
what is secondary data
information that someone else has collected e.g. the work of other psychologists that has been published in journals or government statistics.
what is meta analysis
an objective examination of published data from many studies of the same research topic identified through a literature search.
what is standard deviation
a measure of dispersion or scatter in a data set relative to the data’s central mean value. For example, if the IQ’s of some group have a standard deviation of 10, most of the group will have an IQ within approximately 10 points of the mean.
what is a correlational analysis
statistical method that is used to discover if there is a relationship between two variables/datasets, and how strong that relationship may be
what are the advantages of correlational analysis
can provide evidence for a potential causal relationship between two variables.
what are the disadvantages of correlational analysis
inability to establish causality, potential for confounding variables, and reliance on statistical relationships.
what will a negative skew of data show
data will be clustered to the right
what will a positive skew of data show
data will be clustered to the left
