Data Collection Flashcards
How was the velocity of the river measured? (H3)
Stand in river with back to channel
Stretch tape measure from right bank to left bank
Ensure tape measure was 1m above water surface lvl and held tightly tightly to prevent sag
Look for points on the river before vegetation had started to grow and measure from those points
In the centre of the river channel halfway between the right bank edge and left bank edge hold the velocity meter halfway between the river bed and the surface to avoid stones on river which may interfere with the velocity readings
Average river velocity was calculated and measured in RPM which was then converted into metres per second using a velocity calibration chart
How was the bedload size and shape measured? (H4)
Collect 10 different stones at each site by putting a metre stick in the water and collecting what it touches
Use callipers to measure length of the A axis and B axis and record in cm.
In group, using Powers Index of Roundness, agree on the shape that best suits the bedload and record the number of each stone.
There are 6 stone descriptions with each having a number from 1 to 6.
