Data and quality of data Flashcards
what is meant by encoded
simplifying the wat data is represented. e.g. M for Male
benefits of encoding data
less space used, faster to enter data, fewer errors made when entering code, validation of data easier,
what is meant by speed of access
time taken for a computer to find an item of data
advantages of storing data using ICT
stored more securely, can be encrypted, can be accessed quickly, back ups can be created in other places.
disadvantages of storing data using ICT
equipment can be expensive, specialist staff may be needed, viruses or hackers may damage data
difference between data validation and data verifaication
data validation: used to ensure data entered is sensible
Data verification: used to ensure data has been entered correctly
methods of verification
visual check( comparing source data and transcribed data by eye), double keying (entered by two people error given if there are differences) parity check
difference between transcribed and transmitted data
transcribed is copied from one medium to another, transmitted is sent from one computer medium to another
what is a batch total
number calculated at the start of the transmission of a batch of data. it is done again at the end. newly calculated total compared with the first, difference means error
what is a hash total
a batch total that has no meaning . e.g. the sum of phone numbers
