Dataset
Collection of data acquired for a specific purpose
may relate to multiple experiments for hypotheses
Variable
A number that can ‘vary’ depending on an attribute that were trying to measure
Typically measure several variables from each ppt
Typically form one column in a data file
Types of data
Nominal - no relationship between possibilities in scale
Ordinal - a natural order between possibilities in but nothing else, can’t interpret magnitude of differences
Interval - possibilities are ordered and have interpretable magnitudes, 0 has no meaning
Ratio - Like interval but 0 is directly interpretable and can interpret rations between values.
Continuous and discrete data
Continuous - variable can change freely to take any value. Types: Interval and Ratio
Discrete - numbered variable that takes one of a fixed set of values. Types: Nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio.
