Data Flashcards
What is data used for?
Calculating the effectiveness of a variable
What is a population?
Complete set of subjects or objects
What is a sample?
Subset of a given population
What are examples of sample subjects?
Cells, products, people, SMS messages …
What makes a good sample?
- Consideration of subcategories
- Should not be modified for a better conclusion
What is cherry picking?
Cherry picking is when a sample is modified to suit a researchers conclusion
what are variables?
set of related events that can take on various values
changed due to characteristic or value
What is statistical inference?
How well a property of one variable can be predicted by another
What is independent variable
variable representing the value being manipulated or changed
controlled or selected to determine relationship on observed
Dependent variable
observed result of the independent variable being manipulated
What are levels of independent variables
Also known as conditions or treatments
Different categories within independent variables
What are control variables
Variables that are kept constant to prevent influence of the independent or dependent variable
what are the 4 representative data types in statistics
Nominal
Ordinal
Interval
Ratio
Define nominal data
Data that can’t be ordered or counted
E.g. country or gender
What is ordinal data
Data that can be ordered
Can’t be added or subtracted
E.g. satisfaction rating/ spice level
What is interval data
Can be ordered and a difference can be measured but a ratio cant be formed
No meaningful zero
e.g. exam mark, date, year
What is ratio data
Interval data where a ratio can be formed
Data has meaningful zero
E.g. distance or height
Which data types are qualitative
Nominal and ordinal
Which data types are quantitative
Interval and ratio
What label are the data types under on Jamovi
Nominal and ordinal = categorical
Interval and ratio = continuous
