What is Stern’s theory generally about?
A
Theory- development of the self.
Main focus: looks at the development of the ‘feeling of a self (self-awareness)’ which comes through subjective experiences.
Assumption: infant will register both the process (development of the self) and outcome of this organization (differentiation between the self and others).

What is the sense of self according to Stern
A
A simple (non-reflexive) awareness

Name Stern’s 5 senses of the self and when they appear
A
- The emerging self (1-2 months)
- The core self (2-9 months)
- The intersubjective self (7-9 months)
- The verbal self (from 18months)
- The narrative self (from 3yrs)
1., 2., & 3., are all preverbal senses of self. They develop at the same time and constantly interact with each other.

What are some of the characteristics of the senses of self?
A
- Are not viewed as successive phases that replace each other
- Once formed, each sense of self remains fully functioning and active throughout life.
- They all continue to grow & coexist
