What is Stern’s theory generally about?

A

Theory- development of the self.
Main focus: looks at the development of the ‘feeling of a self (self-awareness)’ which comes through subjective experiences.
Assumption: infant will register both the process (development of the self) and outcome of this organization (differentiation between the self and others).

  1. The emerging self (1-2 months)
  2. The core self (2-9 months)
  3. The intersubjective self (7-9 months)
  4. The verbal self (from 18months)
  5. The narrative self (from 3yrs)

1., 2., & 3., are all preverbal senses of self. They develop at the same time and constantly interact with each other.
