Enriches the yin, drains fire, stabilizes the exterior, and stops sweating
Indications
Fever, night sweats, red face, dry mouth and parched lips, irritability, dry stools, dark and scanty urine
Tongue: red, dry

Chiefs
dāng guī: nourishes the blood, increases the fluids –> lubricate Intestines, moisten dry stools
shēng dì huáng, shú dì huáng: enrich and nourish yin fluids, blood, essence
shēng dì huáng: sweet, bitter, cooling; treat heat from deficiency
Together = nourish water –> enable it to control fire
Deputies
huáng lián: drains fire from the Heart
huáng qín
huáng băi
Together = relieves irritability, drains fire to remove cause of damage to the yin. When fire is drained, internal agitation will subside; when yin is fortified, external draining of sweat will cease.
Assistant
huáng qí: augment the qi and stabilize the exterior. Prevents excessive sweating from causing further injury to yin and yang. Protects Stomach qi from actions of other herbs.
+dāng guī, shú dì huáng: powerful combo for nourishing qi and blood –> interstices and pores tighten –> more difficult for sweat to improperly escape
Cautions and Contraindications
Caution and in modified form in Spleen and Stomach deficiency.
Diagnostic Pattern
Night sweats due to raging fire from an insufficiency of Kidney yin (water), which renders it incapable of properly controlling the Heart yang (fire).
