Dancho A03 Flashcards
What is a limitation of determinism?
it’s not compatible with our legal systems
What is the problem with determinism in the legal system?
- attempts in criminal cases for murderers to claim that their behaviour was determined by aggressive tendencies such as the MAOA gene in biological determinism and therefore should not be punished with the death penalty
- people claim that they were born to kill due to a history of violence in their family but this is just an excuse
What would happen to the justice system if determinism was a factor?
lead to the collapse of the criminal justice system and would allow dangerous murderers to run wild
What is the second limitation with both environmental and biological determinism?
neither are the sole determining factor in behaviour
Neither are the sole determining factor case study
- cases in identical twins as it one twin has depression there is only a 40% change the other will
- suggests that genes do not entirely determine behaviour and that another factor comes into play in determining behaviour such as environmental determinism not just biological for example instead it is what situation each twin has been exposed to
What is a strength of determinism?
it consists with the aims of science and supports the idea that psychology is a science as it can be applied to understanding of behaviour and treating psychological disorders
How has determinism helped in treating disorders?
the prediction and control of human behavioural interventions have benefitted many such as psychotherapeutic drug treatment in controlling and managing schizophrenia
How is determinism applied to schizophrenia?
- the experience of sz where sufferers experience a total loss of control over their thoughts and behaviour casts doubt on the concept of free will thus in terms of mental illness behaviour would be determined
