What are the elements of space? (5)
Shape, level, direction, focus, size
What are the elements of time? (5)
Beat, tempo, accent, rhythmic pattern, duration
What are the elements of force? (4)
Heavy/light, sharp/smooth, tensed/relaxed, bound/flowing
What are the elements of body? (3)
part, shape, base
What are the 4 elements of dance?
Space, Time, force, body
The area surrounding person in which he/she is able to move
SPACE
the specific forms or shapes created by the body in relation to that space (e.g., circles, triangles, symmetrical/asymmetrical shapes).
SHAPE
The vertical distance form the floor. (High, Medium, Low)
LEVEL
Where the body move. (e.g. Forward, backward, up, down, sideways, diagonally, etc.)
DIRECTION
Where the dancer’s eyes look as he/she is dancing
FOCUS
How large or small of the movement
SIZE
The on-going underlying pulse
BEAT
How fast or slow the movement
TEMPO
Strong beats that usually occur at regular intervals
ACCENT
Arranging long and short movement or strong and light movement
RHYTHMIC PATTERN
The length of the time the movement lasts
DURATION
This refers to the weight or effort you put into a movement. Grounded and powerful/ airy and graceful
HEAVY/LIGHT
- This refers to the quality of the movement
- Quick and precise/ flowing and fluid
SHARP/SMOOTH
- Refers to the state of your muscles
- Controlled and forceful/free and effortless
TENSED/RELAXED
Refers to specific sections or parts of the body used during movement (e.g., arms, legs, head, torso).
PART
- Refers to the overall feeling of the movement
- Restricted and contained/ expansive and free
BOUND/FLOWING
The forms or shapes created by the body, whether through individual movements or group formations. It includes concepts like symmetrical or asymmetrical shapes, as well as shapes like circles, squares, triangles, etc.
SHAPE
Refers to the body parts that are in contact with the ground and provide support, such as the feet when standing or the knees when kneeling.
