Dan's Specific Study Flashcards
What is an isometric contraction?
A type of muscle contraction where the muscle does not change its length.
Pushing hard against a wall - the muscles contract but there is no movement at the joints
What is a concentric contraction?
A type of muscle contraction where the muscle shortens while generating force.
Lifting weights - the muscle shortens to overcome the resistance of the weight
What is an eccentric contraction?
A type of muscle contraction where the muscle length increases as the force is stronger than the muscle itself
Name different types of massage used in hand therapy.
Lymphatic drainage massage
Scar Massage
Describe a typical wound healing timeline
Hemostasis: Starts at the onset of injury and is designed to stop bleeding. Blood vessels constrict to allow blood clotting. Platelets stick together to form a dam. Can take up to two days for larger wounds.
Inflammation: swelling is caused by blood vessels leaking transudate (salt, protein, water). Inflammation allows the wound to be cleaned. White blood cells destroy bacteria and remove debris. Can take up to a week.
Proliferation: The wound bed is filled with connective tissue that helps to create new blood vessels. Can take between 4 and 30 days.
Maturation: Scarring and thicker collagen forms. Can take up to a year.
