Dampers Flashcards
What is the purpose of dampers?
Absorb energy stored by the spring
Reduce number of spring oscillations
Create comfortable ride
What do hydraulic dampers do?
Dissipate the energy absorbed from the spring by pumping oil through small orifices which create resistance
What is the main type of hydraulic damper?
Telescopic direct acting damper
What are the 2 types of telescopic direct acting dampers?
Single tube
Twin tube
What is the purpose of the rubber bushes?
Isolate road shocks
Allow for slight angular movement
What do tubular shields do?
Prevent ingress of dirt/moisture
What is the abutment plate?
Limits piston stroke
What maintains the piston in the vertical position and stops fluid loss?
Piston rod guide and seal
What is the bump stroke?
Piston travels down, oil is forced under piston through Reed valves
What is rebound stroke?
Piston travels up
Oil is forced from the top of the piston through Reed valves to the bottom
What are the advantages of a single tube damper?
Displaces a large quantity of fluid without aeration or noise
Provides good heat dissipation
Protected from stone Damage
What is the main difference of a twin tube damper?
Has a reservoir and overflow region controlled by a base valve
What does the sintered iron guide do on the twin damper?
Keeps piston vertical
What do the baffles do?
Prevent violent movement of fluid
Preventing aeration
What maintenance checks should be carried out on a damper?
Security of attachment Excessive wear in rubber bushes Oil leakage Ride height Operation of dampers
