Q

Alternative way to do Daily Scrum?

A

-Walking the board: reviewing by story, rather than person by person.
ADVANTAGES: Can easily see where collaboration is happening with stories, may hear how which stories are getting left behind. Shakes up the formatting.

Q

Common pitfalls for Daily Scrum?

A

-Meeting runs as a “status report.” SOLUTION: Coach team members to lead the meeting as a peer-to-peer basis, rather than a report out to the SM or manager.

-Runs long. SOLUTION: Timeboxing strategies from the facilitator that make the work visible: like visible timers, visible parking lot for keeping track of follow up items/ topics going long

-Team doesn’t see value. SOLUTION: Coaching on value with examples that highlight benefits. Ensuring timeboxing so not seen as a hinderance. Following up on their needs.

-“No problem” meeting– no impediments are raised even though there are issues with delivery at peak performance. SOLUTION: Indicates that team members are not feeling comfortable sharing/ being transparent. Build team culture via retrospectives, meet with devs one on one to learn about needs, inspect company culture for ways to improve psychological safety.

Q

Ideally, who leads the Daily Scrum?

A

The team. This meeting does not require the SM but they should go because 1) best way to hear about impediments, 2) if it’s a meeting valuable enough for the team to go to, SM should be modeling, 3) provide coaching, if needed (timeboxing, facilitation strategies, etc)
