Capacity Planning Flashcards
Info from Katiana's Spreadsheet and https://www.runn.io/blog/capacity-planning
What things are considered for capacity planning
Per person:
-Allocation
-# of days in the sprint
-holidays
-PTO
-Total available hours
-Non project hours (meetings/ development)
-Weekly/ bi-weekly scrum activity
Team:
-Total available hours for the sprint
-Total Team Capacity for the sprint (in hours)
100% utilization rate
-Unhealthy: capacity should be about how much they can REALISTICALLY complete without being burnt out
-Doesn’t account for things like impromptu meetings, potty breaks, etc.
Factors that impact capacity
Holidays, annual leave, maternity leave, illness, other projects, meetings
Healthy utilization rate example
-One source recommends 80%
Example:
10 day sprint x 28 hours x .80 utilization rate= 224 hours capacity
How do Scrum Events factor into capacity planning?
Planning, Review/ demo, retros, and standup should all be accounted for in capacity planning for accurate allocation that factors in the team’s whole day/ week
Velocity formula?
Number of story points delivered during the course of several sprints (I like to use the last 3)/ total number of days in those sprints
