Distribution strategies.
UK poster:
- obvious juxtaposition here suggests that the UK may have a knowledge of the contexts of the cold war.
-More of a focus on character and narrative than conflict.This suggests that the UK may not respond well to dramatised rep of the cold war
US poster:
- Real focus on weaponry and war, though there is a subtle juxtaposition between the neon colours and the black and white central character.
- The words ‘The Wall’ may be needed as anchorage for an American audience.There is more of a sense of fiction.
Production of D83
D83 is a co-production of SundanceTV (American) and RTL Television (German), so it is a German and American co-production.
This positions it to exploit the national and global market.
Production trends with BBC 4’s “The Killing”, that was critically acclaimed and was nominated for a BAFTA.

British trailer of D83
- Sets the context of the show immediately, with cross cuts and 80’s speech which reflects the narrative.
- Enigmatic music anchored with common connotations of spy and war= violence and thriller
-Walter presents logo seen in the beginning , adds validity .
American trailer of D83
- 80s music and retro styler , shows the context and narrative.
- Less dramatic then the UK one, is more fun and focused on the action and the coming of age aspects of it.
-Showing of Sundance logo, adds validity.
German trailer of D83
-Less context seen due to German audiences being familiar with it.
-More enigmatic music : increacses thriller, action and drama aspects of the show.
-No focus on the coming of age, which is diffrent from the other thrillers.
-Takes a more documentary role and a more serious presentation in order to consider the audience’s proximity to the real life situation
Audience reception
- USA figures start low and gradually increases
-UK figures maintain decent viewing figures throughout
-Germany’s viewers decrease by over half : Doesn’t make the viewer empathize with a Satsi agent on a human level
