D2/D3 Flashcards
Describe the 3 dispersion patterns
Uniform- Even due to competition (resources spread evenly over area)
Clumped- Grouped into patches where resources are (generally resources are scarce)
Random- Unaffected by biotic factors (high resources)
R
Biotic potential- Max repro rate under IDEAL conditions (no predation comp and infinite resources)
K
Carrying capacity- Max # of organisms an ecosystem can support due to limiting factors (can change if environment changes)
R Growth Model
Exponential
Ideal conditions (biotic potential)
K growth model
Logistic
Common in nature
Growths until it reaches carrying capacity
Caused by limited resources=stability
Density dependant limiting factors
Biotic
Predators
Availability of resources
Nutrient supply
Disease
Accumulation of waste
Density independent limiting factors
Abiotic
Phenomenon
Abiotic factors
Weather
R-selected life strategy
Takes advantage of good conditions in unstable environment
Expo growth
Individuals are small, high repro rates, fast growth rates and short life spans
Ex. Insects
K-selected life strategy
Lives close to carrying capacity in stable environment
Low birth rates, high life span, slow growth
As pop size increases competition between individuals limits biotic potential
Types of interspecific comp
Interference- Physical fighting
Exploitative- using up resources before competition can
Between whom does interspecific comp occur
Different species w overlapping niches
Gauses Prinicple
2 species can’t compete for a niche forever, one will eventually win ( competitive exclusion)
Symbiosis
Parasitism- +/-
Commensalism- +/0
Mutualism- +/+
What symbiotic relationship is predation
Parasitism
What graph represents pred prey relation
Sinusoidal
Pred pop lags behind prey
