D1 Flashcards
Gene pool
All genes that occur in population
What causes populations to change
Pops change as gene pool changes
What causes allele frequency’s to change
Environmental conditions change
Hardy Weinberg Principal
Predicts allele frequency’s in non evolving pop
States alleles won’t change if :
•pop infinity large
•no mutations
•no natural selection
•mating is random
What happens if allele frequencies overtime’s does not equal allele frequencies predict by HW
Evolution
What is genetic drift and how does if impact a population
Changes to alle frequency due to CHANCE
Causes a decrease in variation and allele fixation (only 1 allele exists)= All individuals would be homozygous for that allele
Strongest in small populations
Types of genetic drift and what would the allele frequency post genetic drift reflect
Founder effect- few individuals leave and create new pop somewhere else
Bottleneck effect- Severe events cause drastic pop size decrease
It would reflect the survivors
Gene flow
Allele moment between open populations caused by migration, high variation, low differences between pops
Mutations
Beneficial mutations are rare but becomes frequent due to natural selection
Harmful recessive alleles can remain in gene pool if there is a heterozygous advantage
Non random mating and affect of inbreeding and self fertilization
Sexual selection=sexual dimorphism (differing male and female appearance)
Inbreeding and SF causes high frequency of homozygous genotypes in gene pool
