D2 - Collecting And Sampling Data Flashcards
Sampling
Used to collect data from part of a population.
Allows researchers to come to conclusions about the population.
Population
A complete set of items that share a common property.
Bias
A distortion of results.
- non representative sample
- participants and researchers being untruthful
Random Sample
Used to collect data from part of the population without bias.
Putting all names into a hat and randomly picking however many you want your sample to be.
-all have an equal chance of being picked
Cluster Sample
Used to collect data from all members of a randomly selected cluster (or group).
-Often used in market research
Population is divided into groups and then a sample of the groups is selected using random sampling.
Stratified Sampling
Used to collect random data from a stratum (layer) where the number of items selected is proportional to the size of the stratum in the population.
Quota Samping
Used to collect data chosen by the sampler from a stratum (layer) where the number of items selected is proportional to the size of the stratum in the population.
Census
Used when every member of the population provides data.
E.g UK National Census is taken every 10 years.
Sample
Part of a population.
