Q

Function of cytoskeleton

A

• Maintains the shape of the cell
• Provides mechanical support
• Involved in cell motility:
- attach itself to proteins in the plasma membrane, and together allows the cell to move along the fibres found outside the cell
- vesicles bordering ER travel along Golgi apparatus
- cytoskeleton controls cell membrane to form food vacuoles for phagocytosis

Q

Centrosomes and centrioles

A
  • centrosome forms microtubules
  • centrioles found inside the centrosome
  • centrioles found at 90° with each other
  • made up of 9 triplet microtubules

Q

Desmones, Gap Junction, Tight junction

A

Functions:

  • Keep both cells close together (connected)
  • Allows direct transport of small molecules between cells
  • Closes off the environment of either cells to each other

Structure:

  • membranes held together by complex proteins that come from disk in cytoplasm of both cells
  • protein channels (connexion proteins) organised with regulated channel between cells
  • Integral proteins which hold plasma membranes of both cells together

Q

Water is the basis for life

A
  • Is used to form the membrane - hydrophilic and hydrophobic tendencies lead to the formation of bilayer
  • Is the basis of the cytoplasm formation, which forms the overall shape of cells
  • Involved on many chemical reactions in the cell (acts as solvent so that more polar solutes are able to diffuse into the cell)
