Compartmentalisation Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of endomembrane
A
SER:
•synthesises lipids, phospholipids, steroids, enzymes
• metabolism of carbs (enzymes)
• detoxification of poisons (by adding OH to drugs, which are metabolised by SER
• removal of PO4 from glucose phosphate to make glucose, which can move into cell
• restores calcium ions
RER:
• makes secretory proteins (produced by its ribosomes)
• membrane factory (adds more proteins and phospholipids)
2
Q
Compartmentalisation
A
- creates favourable conditions for chemical reaction to take place
- Separate chemically heterogenous environments
- Allows eukaryotes to perform chemically incompatible reactions at the same time
- Increases surface area of cells
3
Q
Endomembrane system
A
- Different membranes that carry out different functions
* Membranes connected through physical continuity or movement of membrane segments
