Cytoplasm Flashcards
What is the cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm is the cellular material between the plasma membrane and the nucleus.
What are the three elements in the cytoplasm that are revealed by the electron microscope?
Cytosol, Inclusions and organelles
What is they cytosol made up of?
Cytosol is largely made up of water and contains proteins, salts, sugars, amino acids, and other molecules that suspend all other cytoplasmic elements.
What are the inclusions in cytoplasm?
Inclusions are non-functional chemical substances that may or may not be present in the cytoplasm. Examples include stored sugars called “glycosomes,” lipid droplets, and melanin granules.
Name examples of inclusions in the cytoplasm.

What are organelles and what is their function?
Organelles are the metabolic machinery of the cell and each has a specific function. Most organelles are membranous, but some are non-membranous, such as the cytoskeleton, centrioles, and ribosomes.
What is the difference between membranous and non-membranous organelles?
Membranous organelles have a cell membrane similar to the plasma membrane but lacking glycolax.
