Cytology and histology Flashcards
What are the base nucleotide pairings?
C-G
A-T
A-U
What is the code for changing DNA to RNA?
DNA - CGTA
RNA - GCAU
What are the different shapes of epithelial tissue?
Squamous - flat and long (like a fried egg)
Cuboidal - cubelike
Columnar - tall and columnlike
Stratified - multiple layers with the top layer that looks like the shape
Simple - single layer
Pseudostratified - not in layers
transitional - stretchy and changes shape
What is simple squamous epithelial tissue?
Tissue that lines body cavities and blood vessels and is found in areas where passive diffusion occurs. It is the most fragile. It is made up of thin and flat cells.
What is simple cuboidal epithelial tissue?
Tissue that provides protection to underlying tissues and is involved in absorption and secretion. It is found in the kidneys, lungs, and pancreas. It is made up of cube shaped cells.
What is simple columnar epithelial tissue?
Tissue that is involved in absorption and secretion and found in the digestive tract, female reproductive organs, and small intestine. It is made up of column shaped cells.
What is pseudostratified columnar epithelial tissue?
Tissue that is involved in the secretion of mucus and protection of the respiratory tract. It is found in the inner ear, trachea, and lower respiratory tract.
What are the different types of connective tissue?
- Adipose - Stores energy, insulates body, produces hormones and is found under the skin, between internal organs and inner cavities
- Reticular - forms a supportive framework for organs and is found near the liver, spleen, lymph nodes and bone marrow
- Hyaline cartilage - Adds cushion so bone doesn’t rub on bones and is found in joints and caps bones
- Elastic cartilage - Supports the body and helps it to bend and move. It is found in ears, larynx, and eustachian tubes.
- Bone tissue - Provides structure and support and is found in bones.
