CYTOLOGY Flashcards
Found in smears that have been spntaneously been shed or physically removeed from epithelial mucous membranes (vagina, buccal mucosa, body fluids)
Exfoliative cells
The staining method of choice for exfoliative cytology
Papanicolaou
the new system of reporting cervical and vaginal cytologic diagnosis
Bethesda System
A fixative composed of 50% Ethanol and 2% carbowax
Saccomano’s Fixative
What specimen(s) require 95% Ethanol
Cervical/Vaginal smears
Sputum and Bronchopulmonary spx
Gastric specimens
Pleural and Peritoneal fluids require what type of fixative
Brasil’s Fixative
Spray Fixative can also be used but the slide must be kept at a distance of
1 foot (12 in or 30.5 cm) from the spray
Majority of CERVICAL CARCINOMAS and PRECANCEROUS LESIONS of the CERVIX arise from the junction of endocervical/ectocervical mucosa of what zone?
Transformational zone (T zone)
samples of ENDOCERVICAL CANAL
Endocervical Brush
Cytologica Collection for patients with HYSTERECTOMY
Vaginal scape
Collection used for hormonal evaluation
Lateral Vaginal Scrape
Collection ofr localization of VAGINAL ADENOSIS
Four Quadrant Vaginal Scrape
Collection for detection of HERPETIC LESIONS or CARCINOMAS
Vulvar Scrape
defined as SCREENING TOOL used to detect PRECANCEROUS condition; not DIAGNOSTIC
Papsmear
Confirmatory test for PAPSMEAR
Biopsy
Colposcopy
Adhesive agents may be used in the following specimens:
Bronchial Lavage
Urinary Sediment
Concentrated sputum
Specimen w/ Trypsin
An adhesive NOT recommended for CYTOLOGIC smears bec it is intensely stain by the BASIC LIGHT GREEN counterstain of Papanicolaou method
Egg albumin
Characteristics of Adhesive agents
must NOT RETAIN the stain
must be PERMEABLE to both STAIN and FIXATIVE
Adhesive Agents for CYTOLOGIC method
Human Plasma Serum
Leukonostoc Culture
Celloidin-ether alcohol
Vaginal Hormonal Cytology smears are taken from the
Upper lateral third of the vaginal wall
Recommended only in VAGINAL HORMONAL studies
Wooden spatula
Exhibits TRUE ACIDOPHILIA under ESTROGEN INFLUENCE; has DARKEN and SHRUNKEN nuclei Pyknotic
Mature Superficial Cells
Found in the latter half of MENSTRUAL CYCLE, PREGNANCY and MENOPAUSE, under PROGESTERONE control; also called NAVICULAR CELLS
Intermediate cells
Nucleus is eccentric, oval- round BOAT-SHAPED, basophilic and TRANSLUCENT CYTOPLASM. DOUBLE-WALLED BOUNDARY
Pregnancy cells
Round to oval in shape
smaller than intermediate
normally found fro 2 WEEKS of age to PUBERTY, during ABORTION, after mEANOPAUSE and after CHILDBIRTH
Parabasal Cells
Similar to parabasal cells in appearance
Occurs in groups of 3 or more
Slightly CYLINDRICAL with less BASOPHILIC cytoplasm
found 1-4 days AFTER MENSTRUATION
Endometrial cells
Honeycomb in appearance
Endocervical Glandular cells
found BEFORE PUBERTY and AFTER MENOPAUSE. Cytoplasm STRONGLY BASOPHILIC
Basal cells
