Cytokines, etc Flashcards
IL-1
Fever, acute inflammation, expression of adhesion molecules and chemotaxis for WBCs (secreted by macrophages)
IL-6
Fever, produciton of acute phase proteins (secreted by macrophages)
TNF-a
Cachexia (via ubiquination of muscle proteins), keeps granulomas in check, Crohn’s disease, activates endothelium, WBC recruitment, vascular leak (secreted by macrophages)
IL-8
Chemotaxis for Neutrophils (secreted by macrophages)
IL-12
Th –> Th1 cell (secreted by macrophages)
IL-2
- By T cells, for (all) T cells (self-propogation)
- Also promotes the growth of B cells, activation of NK cells and monocytes
IL-3
Growth + differentiation of bone marrow stem cells (as does GM-CSF), secreted by all T cells
IFN-gamma
Main (intracellular) bacterial interferon
- Macrophages, NK cells –> kill phagocytosed pathogen + virally infected cells
- Activates APCs
- Inhibits Th –> Th2 differentiation
IL-4
Th –> Th2 cells, proliferation of B cells, class switching to IgA and IgE (pathogenesis of asthma)
IL-5
Eosinophils. But also B cell proliferation and class switching to IgA (secreted by Th2 cells)
IL-10
The off switch:
- Inactivate macrophages + dendritic cells (–> facilitate fibroblast proliferation in wound healing)
- Decr. MHC II and Th1 cytokines
IL-13
Class switching to IgE
IL-17
Stimulate production of TNF-a and prostaglandins, induce bony erosions and abnormal bone growth (e.g. in Ankylosing Spondylitis)
