What are the symptoms of cystitis?
A
- Pain when peeing
- Frequency
- Urgency
- Cloudy pee
- Nocturia
- Haematuria
- Voiding small amounts and more painful at the end of voiding

What are the symptoms of pyelonephritis (kidney infection)?
A
- Flank pain
- Temp
- Nausea and vomiting
Sudden onset

What are the symptoms of an std?
A
- Pain and Dysuria - same as cystitis
- Vaginal discharge
- Pus in urine

What medicines can cause cystitis?
A
- NSAIDS
- Allopurinol
- Danazol
- Cyclophosphamide

What specific questions should be asked about cystitis?
A
- Duration - more than 5-7 days refer in case of kidney inf
- Age - children refer due to potential structural abnormality and over 70 due to high risk of complications
- Fever present - refer as likely upper UTI
- Vaginal discharge - likely infection not cystitis
- Location of pain - loin = upper UTI

What instances should you refer a patient?
A
- Under 16 or over 70
- Fever and flank pain - upper/complicated UTI
- Vaginal discharge
- Duration over 7 days
- Diabetes or immunocompromised
- Haematuria
- Pregnancy

What would you use to treat cystitis and dose?
A
Alkalinizing agents - 2 day course taken 3 times a day

When using potassium citrate, what patients groups should you be cautious with?
A
Those taking ACE inhibitors, k sparing diuretics and spironolactone

When using sodium citrate, what patients groups should you be cautious with?
A
Patients with HD, HTN or renal impairment

What advice would you give?
A
- Drink around 2l of water every day to promote bladder voiding
- Dilute k citrate with water to improve taste
