Q

How does cystic fibrosis affect the respiratory system

A

. Cilia cannot move mucus out of lungs toward throat as it’s thick and sticky

Q

How does cystic fibrosis affect the digestive system

A

. Tube connecting pancreas to small intestine becomes blocked with mucus - pancreatic digestive enzymes can’t reach small intestine
. Reduces ability to digest food, fewer nutrients absorbed
. Mucus causes cysts in pancreas, inhibit enzyme production
. Mucus lining in small intestine is abnormally thick, inhibits absorption of nutruents.
. High energy diet required because digestion is less efficient

Q

How does cystic fibrosis affect the reproductive system

A

. Tubes connecting testicles to penis (sperm duct) are absent and can become blocked by thick mucus.
. Sperm can’t reach penis

. Cervical mucus prevents sperm reaching egg
. Thick mucus reduces motility of sperm, reducing its chances of making it to the egg.
