Cybercrime Flashcards
What is a DDoS attack?
Cyber-attacks that uses multiple compromised computer systems to flood a targeted server or network with internet traffic, for the server to crash.
Prevention strategies of DDoS attacks
- Cyber resilience –> strengthen organizations’ and individuals’ ability to withstand and recover from cyberattacks.
- Focused deterrence –> combine the threat of sanctions with prosocial alternatives to change offender behavior
- Nudging –> use behavioral economics to influence decisions subtly, such as displaying warning banners or targeted online ads.
What are two types of cybercrime?
-Cyber-dependent crime: any crime that can only be committed using computers, computer networks or other forms of information communication technology (e.g., hacking, malware, ransomware)
- Cyber-enabled crime: traditional crimes facilitated by the internet and digital technologies (e.g., fraud, through phishing, piracy and counterfeiting)
What is the problems with cybercrime?
Very little skill is needed to begin criminal activity online (in cyber-dependent crime).
Two pathways:
1. playing videogames and modifying these games
2. fascination with technology, computers, and cybersecurity.
What is the difference between a IP-stressor and a booter?
IP-stressor is a tool designed to test a network or server for robustness (legal).
Booters are on-demand DDoS (Distributed-Denial-of-Services) attack service offered by enterprising criminals in order to bring down websites and networks (illegal)
