They are attacks against an application where there are multiple attempts to break in or get an account/password. They use common passwords/dictionary passwords/word lists and it could be online or offline.

phishing is a kind of social engineering attack where they send you an email with a link attachment.
it is one of the most common threats nowadays and the purpose is is to obtain personal information or gain money

1) write an URL on your browser
2) browser send a request to the DNS ( domain name server)
3) DNS server returns the IP address to the URL
4) browser opens IP adress
