Cutaneous and Superficial Muscles of Neck Flashcards
Sternocleidomastoid
Origin
Sternal head: anterior surface of manubrium of sternum
Clavicular head: superior surface of medial third of clavicle
Sternocleidomastoid
Insertion
Lateral surface of mastoid process of temporal bone and lateral half of superior nuchal line
Sternocleidomastoid
Innervation
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI; motor), C2 and C3 nerves (pain and proprioception)
Sternocleidomastoid
Actions
Draws corners of mouth inferior and widens it as in expressions of sadness and fright; draws skin of neck superior when teeth are clenched, indicating tension
Roof of Lateral
Investing layer of deep cervical fascia, platysma
Inferior Border of Lateral
Clavicle (between SCM and trapezius)
Superior Border of LAteral
Merging of SCM and trapezius
Posterior Border of Lateral
Anterior border of trapezius
Anterior Border of Lateral
Posterior border of SCM
Sternocleidomastoid Region
SCM, superior part of EJC, greater auricular nerve, transverse cervical nerve, inferior part of IJV
Posterior Cervical Region
Descending part of trapezius muscle; cutaneous branches of posterior rami of cervical spinal nerves; suboccipital region lies deep to superior part of this region
Lateral Cervical Region (posterior triangle of neck)
Part of EJV, posterior branches of cervical plexus of nerves, spinal accessory nerve, trunks of brachial plexus, cervicodorsal trunk, cervical lymph nodes
Floor of Lateral Cervical Region
Splenius capitis, levator scapulae, middle scalene, posterior scalene
